LOUIS KAHN EXETER LIBRARY THOUGHT MODEL
www.evandhall.com
This model was constructed using plans and sections of Luis Kahn's Exeter Library. Small blocks represent small group spaces, large blocks large group spaces, and the narrow long blocks represent the individual. The individual in this structure is dominant, and is modeled in a way that holds together the entire model. The blocks themselves represent the layers of current knowledge which can be gathered from reading the thousands of books collected in the library. The baltic bass wood blocks help illustrate this point with layers of wood running in opposite directions. The small groups and large groups are oriented vertical for it is in these areas where a vertical articulation of knowledge occurs, progressing the student to a level beyond physical structure.
